INFORMATION

1. What is a Firestone RubberCover Membrane?
Made of Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Terpolymer, Firestone RubberCover EPDM is a 100% cured single-ply roofing synthetic rubber membrane. It comes in various sizes, the biggest being 15 m wide and 61m long and more than 1,000,000,000 square metres of it have been successfully installed on commercial, industrial and residential roofs worldwide since 1980.

2. Is there a warranty for a Firestone RubberCover EPDM membrane?
We offer a 20-year material-only warranty and a 10 year insurance backed guarantee on the workmanship, for installations carried out by our trained contractors.

3. How long will the membrane last?
According to the latest studies, the life expectancy of the membrane is more than 50 years, even when exposed to sunlight. Meanwhile, it offers an unparalleled resistance to ozone, alkali rains, UV radiation and high or low temperatures.

4. Will the membrane require any protective coat?
Being totally UV-stable, the membrane does not require any chippings, ballast or solar reflective paint.

5. Is one-sided application of the membrane sufficient?
No, the bonding adhesive must always be applied to both surfaces. If water-based adhesive is used, it needs to be applied either using the wet mate method (i.e. to the substrate only) or using the two-sided contact method (i.e. both to the underside of the membrane and the substrate, depending on the weather conditions).

6. What are the coverage rates for the adhesives?
The approximate figures are as follows:
- Bonding adhesive is 2 square metres per litre
- Water-based adhesive for the two-sided application method is 2 square metres per litre
- Water-based adhesive for the wet mate method is 3 square metres per litre

7. Does the installation of the membrane depends on weather conditions?
Yes, it does. The application of the adhesives requires a minimum temperature of +5 ºC and a maximum humidity of 80%. If in the following 48 hours the temperature is likely to drop below 0ºC, a special bonding adhesive needs to be applied (for more details, contact us, we supply this product).

8. What are the benefits of this product for a roofing contractor?
The Firestone RubberCover Membrane is the ideal product for roofers to work with due to several reasons:
- It is cold-applied, which reduces any risks related to heated installation, and thus your public liability insurance.
- Since the membrane can be cold-applied, the installation is quick, which is great when there are restricted weather gaps.
- It boasts a strong global branding.
- It has a 50-year life expectancy.
- It is available in large seamless sheets (up to 12m X 30.5 m), which also contributes to a faster installation.

9. Can EPDM be used for green roofs? Yes, it can, but we recommend a root barrier for such installations. Furthermore, since many residential roofs, and even large commercial ones have little or no joints, there is nothing to fail.

10. What areas do you cover?

  • Dartford, Gravesend, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Medway
  • Bexley, Bexleyheath, Welling, Erith, Belvedere, Sidcup, Eltham
  • Swanley, Framingham, Eynsford, Darenth
  • Orpington, Petts Wood, Chislehurst, Bromley, Beckenham
  • The rest of Kent and London and beyond

11. In case of damage, how can the membrane be repaired?
For damage on flat areas, the membrane can be easily repaired with a piece of Quickseam SA Flashing patch. When the damage occurs at angle changes, a Quickseam Corner Flashing patch is used instead.

12. Is the membrane available in different colours?
No, the membrane is available only in slate grey. However we supply an acrylic paint in white or grey if you want.

13. Which substrates can I adhere the membrane to?
The membrane can adhere to OSB3 board, plywood timber, and smooth concrete and tissue-faced insulation boards. New concrete is suitable as well provided it is fully cured before membrane installation, and this takes a minimum of 28 days.

14. Are any precautions required during installation?
The basic measures of protection you need to take are:
- Use the adhesives only in well ventilated areas
- Keep the adhesives away from ignition sources
- Do not smoke when applying adhesives
- Wear gloves

15. Can I walk on a Firestone RubberCover EPDM roof?
Yes, but make sure no sharp objects (e.g. small stones) are attached to the underside of your footwear. If you want to access the roof on a regular basis, you need to protect the membrane with a walkway (pavers placed on protective rubber feet).

16. Does the membrane have an up- and downside?
The membrane has two sides but there is no difference between them. There is a clear wording that states on which side the membrane should be laid.
